Switching to the new UJI mail system with Google

After several months of work, the Universitat Jaume I is now gradually rolling out Google infrastructures to host e-mail from the University members and plenty of tools for taking advantage of all the benefits that the Internet giant offers.

 

What happens when we choose to activate e-mail in the new system

Once you have activated yo5ur e-mail account in the new system, you will receive your new e-mails in this new account and you will be able to continue working either with the e-mail client you already have on your computer (e.g., Outlook, Thunderbird and so on) or through the new web interface (Gmail). This change does not involve changing your e-mail address. The tutorials section contains detailed information on how to configure Thunderbird and Outlook clients.

The old system will shift to a read-only mode that will enable you to read and move your e-mail for at least three months.

If you do not want to change your e-mail to the new system yet, you will be able to work normally with the current system until the date when the compulsory change to the new Google platform for all the University members will take place. This date will be announced in due course.

How to activate e-mail on the new Google platform

To make this change, which affects all members of the University, there are two mechanisms you can choose from:

  • Fast option (without e-mail transfer):

 

 If you have not yet been transferred to the new UJI mail platform on Google and you want to use the new system straight away, without having your e-mail transferred by us, either because you want to start from scratch or because you know how to do it yourself, you can do this by selecting the option below.

There are several ways of transferring your e-mail (over a period of three months), but the most convenient is to configure the two accounts on an IMAP mail client such as Outlook or Thunderbird. You can then select and move messages or folders from one account to the other.

  • Slow option (with e-mail transfer):

 

If you prefer to migrate your e-mail and to arrange it in the same way as you have it now, as well as activating the new system, , you should bear in mind that this could take some time and is therefore not immediately available to everyone. For this reason, and in order not to interfere with the everyday work of the University’s users, the mailboxes will be moved gradually  and will initially be based on the user’s choice.

During this process, a limited number of invitations will be generated each day and they will be assigned at random to users from the selected group. When your user has been selected, you will see that a page with the option to carry out the transfer when you log into the University page with your username.

 

If you choose to transfer your e-mail at that point, this process of copying your mail to the new system will begin, and may take about 24 hours.
