Welcome to the cloud.

Google Apps UJI is a joint project between the Universitat Jaume I and Google to develop a set of online communication and collaboration tools, which will start with Google Docs (the application for creating, sharing and saving text documents, spreadsheets, presentations and more on the Internet) and will soon continue with email, diary and calendar services, and a tool for creating blogs and websites, among many other features.

The Universitat Jaume I has always aimed to be in the vanguard of technological development, especially in the field of information technologies, and this has been one of the institution’s distinguishing features since it was established. We created Spain’s first website and first search engine. We have been pioneers in providing information to students using electronic media and in adopting new virtual classroom environments.

We are also at the forefront of institutional repositories, among many other outstanding achievements.

As a public higher education institution, we must anticipate changes in order to improve our teaching, research and management. Above all, we must take advantage of technologies to promote new kinds of personal and institutional relationships and access to knowledge.

This second decade of the 21st century will be characterised by what has been called ‘migration of services to the cloud’; or in other words, the transfer to the Internet of most of the activities that we carry out with computers. The cloud is not just another opportunity to optimise the use of computer resources that are already available: it is also the foundation for building worldwide social networks, knowledge repositories open to everyone, collaboration platforms between researchers from around the world, new multimedia channels and applications that we cannot even imagine yet.

So now is the time to get on the cloud, to include its infinite possibilities in our everyday work, to improve our teaching with excellent collaboration tools, to go further in research by making our knowledge easily available to everyone, speeding up management and increasing productivity, and in short, creating access to our digital world from any device.

Google now offers us the opportunity to use a wide range of services to improve our teaching, our research and our management. We will be pioneers in adopting tools that will be widespread in Spanish public universities within a few years. The UJI will once again be at the cutting edge of inexorable change.

We will gradually be rolling out the Google applications. We are beginning with Google Docs, the office suite for sharing documents and making the creation of collaborative content easier. Other tools such as Google Calendar or Google Mail will be added later, as we learn from experience, when we are in a position to provide good computer support, and when the training of our staff enables us to take full advantage of these new tools.

It is true that being pioneers involves taking risks, but it also gives us the opportunity to open up new paths for innovation and to be a benchmark for those joining this initiative later. This adventure involves the entire university community, but above all the Computing Service, the Centre for Education and New Technologies, the Planning and Technology Forecasting Bureau, the Technological Innovation Laboratory, the Communication and Publications Service and the Vicerector’s Office for the Campus, Infrastructure and New Technologies. We would like to thank them for their work in recent months, without which we would not be able to get on the cloud.

Now is the time. Get on the cloud with the UJI.
